The JuJu Bag Cafe

JuJu Bag Cafe
5363 Franklin Ave
New Orleans, LA 70122
(504) 872-0969

I am reluctant to share this with you because this place has become my personal refuge. But since sharing is caring....

The JuJu Bag Cafe has two things that make it a great place to eat, relax and hangout: Ambience and Great Food!

With the mellow colors and music, they have created a very warm and relaxing atmosphere that embraces you and encourages you to stay. I often eat and just sit for a couple of hours, indulging myself in relaxation. To facilitate this even more, there is an expansive patio in the rear for you to soak up a little nature with your beverage and meal.

While advertised as vegetarian and vegan, there are some delicious fish and chicken items on the menu for the carnivore in all of us. Some of my favorites have been the Salmon Burger on Flatbread with the Dijon Mustard, as well as the Avocado Salad and the Grilled Chicken Panini with the Raspberry Vinaigrette Sauce. My favorite beverage has become the Hot Chai Tea. The portions are ample and satisfying!

If that was not enough, there is good entertainment that goes along with the good food.

On Thursday nights there is the 'Word Connection' open mic spoken word show. A variety of poets share their prowess at combining word, rhyme and rhythm. So come by and have a listen, be inspired and speak on it!

On Friday nights there is a jazz ensemble that plays beautiful music that will certainly provide the rhythm to aid in the peristaltic action of your rhythmic digestion.

Also, from time to time, there are theatrical productions staged out in the expansive patio area.

The JuJu Bag has you covered, mind, body and soul. So, with all of this, can you understand why I wanted to keep this to myself? So now my secret is out.

Come and join me!

I love mussels, so the Mussels Mariniere had their work cut out trying to impress me. They were good, but merely ordinary.

But then it happened. They brought out my Seared Duck Breast (Medium). In a word, OMG! Other words like savory, succulent and even salacious come to mind too. The duck was perfectly cut with just the right amount of skin on the lean meat. It was prepared to perfection and was tender, juicy and flavorful.

This duck brought two companions on his journey into my gastronomic bliss! But I can scarcely remember their names as the duck was overwhelming! It's like how you meet someone at a party who interests you so much that you forget who else you met that night.

After my meal, I walked back toward the kitchen and gave the chef a high five and my very sincere compliments. He said the duck was his favorite dish to prepare.

I certainly will be returning for more...quack, quack!

When the cook's name is 'Mother Nature', you know you can't go wrong.

Your food is made fresh to order while you wait. The jerk chicken and fish are delicious and just one of the fine treats on a varied menu.

If you can't stand the heat, there is seating available on the sidewalk cafe section. Take a bite, close your eyes and feel the cool tropical breeze mon! It's just like you are in Jamaica.

First of all, let me say that my food was terrific! The appetizers was the mussels in a wonderful sauce. Next up was the oyster salad. The oysters were golden fried and huge. I had to cut them in thirds to keep from gagging. A wonderful touch to the salad was the seedless grapes. They were a pleasant surprise in my mouth and when I ate one with a tomato it made for the perfect mixture of juices to keep the salad from tasting too dry. Very good.

The service here was prompt, professional and efficient. When I walked in and saw the crowd, I thought it would take a while to be both seated and served. Seating took about five minutes and service was just as fast. It seems to be a 'all hands on deck' effort here as everyone was doing everything to service the customers, managers and owners alike!

Now, about the noise. This place can get quite loud when full. The bare ceilings, walls and floor allow every conversation to reverberate around the room. This creates a continuous din that may be too much for some to find pleasant.

So we had both a cacophony of both flavor and sound going on at the same time.

Overall, I enjoyed my food and would highly recommend you getting a meal here as I will certainly do again.
